Ah ... they follow the flowers and look like tomatoes. They are poisonous however, so best removed in case children think they're tomatoes ... and it'll let the plants put their energy into producing spuds.

Potatoes do grow from stems ... usually underground but sometimes, if the stems above ground are in the dark they will grow small potatoes.
You're not getting confused with the green potato fruits that look like green tomatoes are you?
