Sunflowers

Are sunflowers temperamental? I moved these off of a pedastal onto the ground last night (about 2 feet away) and now they look like this.... No real reason for this at all. They are always watered.

Have slugs and/or snails been chomping on the stem?

I couldn't see any snail damage. I've staked them now and watered heavily. Will see if they live.

Perhaps a fox peed on it?

I always stake my sunflowers as soon as they get to about 12" tall.
