I inherited an old grapevine which grows over a built garden trellis. Every year it is abundant with small green seedless grapes - don't know the variety. We made wine with them last year but that's another story....

Anyway - I've never pruned anything in my life. Do I need to prune this, if so, how and when?

If you just want to keep it tidier then trim off the growth two nodes beyond the last bunch of grapes on each stem. You could also trim off any leaves which are shading the grape bunches to get maximum ripening.

  • Many thanks for that. I will also drastically trim the Russian Vine that is growing all over it and everything else, in the autumn, probably get rid of it or replant it somewhere else, maybe use it to cover the oil tank....

Trim excess off now, as Steephill says. In the winter, say January (not on a frosty day), prune hard back to two buds of this years growth.

    It's not a mess, it's a nature reserve.
