can a clematis be planted too deep ?  Three years old this summer and still not reached height of came support of 4ft, thanks.

    Pauline, I've got two Group 2 clematis planted at the foot of an obelisk. They have been there about 15 months and made limited progress despite regular watering, mulch around them etc. Yet a Clematis Montana was planted in late April and has reached the top of a 6ft fence panel already.     

  • Clematis vary in height from 30 cms to 15 metres when fully grown, so without knowing the varietie(s) it is difficult to comment.
