Mystery fish!
my mum passed away just over a year ago and we inherited her eight pond gold fish. One by one they disappeared and this year only two large fan tail ones have re appeared. (I think a heron had the rest)
anyway today I have spotted two little gold fish about inch and half long, possibly babies from the fan Tails? And then three large grey/brown/b/dark ones about 3 to 4 inches long!!! Where have they come from and what are they?!!!
im still in shock

Maybe they had babies last year? Mild winter and they have survived to grow.
I started with ten babies, lost four and ended up with hundreds. The major frost some years ago finished the lot off, and I have never restocked.
GOLDFISH ARE QUITE KEEN TO BREED. WE HAD ABOUT FORTY FRY IN OUR POND THIS SPRING. THE WATERBOATMEN AND LARGE DRAGONFLY LARVAE ATE QUITE A LOT OF THEM. THE REMAINING ONES, ABOUT A DOZEN, HAVE GROWN FROM AN INCH TO THREE INCHES IN LENGTH IN ABOUT FOUR MONTHS.
THEY BEGIN LIFE AS BROWN BODIED AND GRADUALLY TURN GOLD AS THEY GET OLDER.
If you live in Derbyshire, as I do.
Shall I get Dove to sit down and read the "how babies are made" book to you?
Congratulations you're a grandma!
Thank you all for info
