boston ivy and lilly of the valley have taken over

We have a lot of perennial garden in our yard and kept them beautifully until work patterns changed about 10 yrs ago. If you like lush green ground cover they are lovely but they have spread and thickened and taken over the garden, choking out many of the other plants and growing the garden as thy move slowly into the grass. Suddenly this is bothering me and I want my old gardens back! We just spent 2 hours in the garden and it is work that is too hard on our backs. What would you suggest we do? Is there a secret to removing them? If we could get the ivy out of the picture, then we could dig up the lily of the valley (the soil is good and soft).

Thanks!
