Oh yes. I'm a big supporter of him having hives and we regularly talk bee, although he's moved a few down to a site near a market gardeners now. Last year I took up my front lawn and turned it all over to bee friendly flowers.
They don't show any gratitude though - they head straight to a field with Poppies in
Good to hear you are supporting your neighbour and his bees.
We currently have about 8 hives in our garden ... plus some nucs we are bringing on for beginners .... so probably half a million or so bees at the height of the season!!
I also plant loads of things in the garden with the bees in mind .... but when the oilseed rape is flowering I hardly see them.
They are busy on the lime trees just now ... which is a truly delicious honey.

Tracey I wish we had a neighbour like you! We have bees but our neighbour has cut down all the flowers that were in the garden when they moved in. He also sprays chemicals on the weeds and cuts his hedges with an electric hedge trimmer in the spring. Our bees do not often bother anyone but they always swarm on his lilac bush!!
I have had Lavatera (bee magnets) for 20 years but last year the ones round the back got rust so I had to take them out. I put 3 new ones in the front but they've come up this year with rust so they've had to go too. I've also had a wild bunny visiting the front daily for about 10 months and it's amazing how much one little thumper can eat!! He's cute as a button - but if I ever manage to attach this photo - this was a month ago and the bare patches are all down to him.
I like your planting Tracey, I bet they go wild for the Verbena's? I know some neighbours are not so tolerant of hives next door but like you, I would love it!
Bee witched, would it be uncommon if I were to e-mail my nearest bee keeper and ask to visit his hives? Purely out of interest & with the potential of taking a course myself
A nuc is short for a nucleus of bees. This is a smaller colony of bees kept in a nucleus box. It is usually created by splitting an existing hive and getting the bees to create a new queen. As the number of bees builds up they will be rehoused in a full hive box.
Hi Mary,
Not sure how renting a hive would work .... I'd be interested to know more if you find out anything. They really are fascinating .... their navigation and communication systems are amazing. After 10 years of keeping bees we are still very much novices!

Bee witches. ......you rent a hive for a season or year.......you keep the honey etc. The guys come 2 or 3 times to check everything is going well. .....sounds very interesting. ......but I'm a bit nervous about having a swarm in the garden. I spoke with the guy and he said they are very docile. He has several different sized hives. Check it out on fb.

Something wrong....have attached pics loads of times before but it's just adding a black cross. Never mind.
I've reported the site as I've rebooted and tried Edge/IE and Chrome and still can't add a picture.

There is a company after setting up near here and you can rent a hive.......I want to research it a bit more. Bees are fascinating creatures.
