New lawn

Hello

I will be laying a new lawn using turf. What is the best method of getting it level? The depth is about 12 inch, what's the max depth for topsoil and what's the best material to use under the topsoil? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

    Not sure I understand 'the depth is about 12 inches' bit. Perhaps you could explain further?
