Beech tree disease

I have noticed the following black marks on some beech trees that form a hedge. I've tried to look it up and it seems to be fungal disease which may be due to scale insects, although I cannot see any. Would anyone know what it is and if I can treat it? Especially as I have 3 massive beech trees nearby which are over 100 years old! Thank you. Muriel
