First sign's of life

After my disaster with my potatoes (earlier article) what i am after is information in to how to give my runner bean's the best chance of success as i am now seeing small plant tip's coming through the soil .

I have already put up a bamboo cane frame for the plant's to grow up and planted a few seed's at the end of each row to replace any seed's that fail .

I planted bean seed's directly in to the ground around 2 week's ago and i am impressed how quick they have shown through any helpful advice and tip's to help me get a good crop of the bean's would be a great help and welcome

Water well and keep slugs off. A slug pub of beer is useful.  If they are not winding round the sticks, I tie them on at first with soft string.

Another good way to keep off the slugs is to use water retention crystals, you would usually mix with soil but if you sprinkle on the soil they dry up the slugs. Have worked for me might not look too pretty later but at that point just hoe  them in. Two for one use. Good luck as they are great only minutes from pick to plate.

I did some reading up on water retention crystals a couple of years back .......... and stopped using them immediately

No need to waste good beer on slugs.  Dissolve some sugar in a jar of warm water, add a pinch of baking yeast and leave it in the kitchen for a few days.  In my garden, they drown themselves in this brew as readily as if it was Theakston's Old Peculier.  You'll need to replace it every couple of days, or after rain, so I start off a fresh batch daily.  An additional benefit: watching the blobs of yeast drift up and down in the fermenting liquid is almost as hypnotic as a murmuration of starlings.
