Hi,
What is the rule of thumb regarding shrub spacing, I have the eventual size of the shrubs say Lavender 600mm wide Rose 600mm wide, what centre to centre should I give them so the garden has a cottage feel to it?

It will take a good few years for a lavender to grow to 600mm across while a rose will do it in a season. I'm afraid you just have to use your own instinct. I would plant lavenders about 1 foot apart but give roses their full 2 if not 3 ft apart.
