Almost missed this stranger amongst our Astilbe.    What could it be?

    looks like astilbe buds to me

    I think you could be right. I'll let it flower and might find a spot for it.

    Agree with Nut, they do look like Astilbe buds.

    Did they tear it out with talons of steel
    And give you a shot, so that you wouldn't feel?
    And washed it away as if it wasn't real?

    I've got lots of Astillbe but haven't got any with thick woody, hairy brown stems, I'll have a look and see,

    Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

    Definitely not Astilbe.  The stems are much thicker,and as you say, hairier.

    against the Rhus. Where are its leaves? trees and shrubs don't throw up flowers straight out of the ground with no leaves.

    Wondering about fasciation now if the stems are very thick

    I agree with Nut. The flower should be fascinating.

    I am sure it isn't Rhus.

    Still think it looks like Astilbe.
