Brown blobs

Made an effort to start gardening and design a flower border this year and am very pleased with the result so far. One problem I have come across is that I have some tall lillies just starting to flower and they are full of damage to the flowers and leaves. The only thing I can see that could be causing it, is what looked like insect pupas on the undersides but when I tried to knock them off, they were like brown liquid that smudged all over my fingers. I've sprayed them with fly spray, wrongly or rightly ? but it would be nice to know what the things are. Thanks Alan

If they looked like the picture below they are Lily beetle larvae:

  • The adult beetles are bright red, and drop to the ground when disturbed. You can easily crush them underfoot. The larvae cover themselves with their own droppings. A strong jet of water will get rid of them.

Thank you Alan and Ladybird, sorry I didn't reply earlier, I couldn't open up the thread before. Yes that looks like the offending pest, I'm away at the moment for a wedding but I watered them with a hose pipe before I left and sprayed them with fly spray so I'll see how they look on Monday image

    Fingers crossed you've 'sorted' them!
