    I think Mahonia, assuming we are looking at the green leaves, I have berberis small red leaves, orange berries later, yes lots of prickles!

    rather a lot of different berberis to choose from and that's one of them.

    A photo of the shape of the bush would help ID which one this is

    I don't think it is mahonia and it looks very different to the Berberis thunbergii that I have elsewhere.

    It is very different to Berberis thunbergii

    Look at images of   Berberis gagnepainii for example

    We had one,and when we dug it out,it had yellow roots. I think that means it's a berberis

    In London. Keen but lazy.

  • definitely NOT mahonia which doesn't have any spines but stiff leathery prickly leaves - my favourite shrub for birds.
