Anyone know what this is?
berberis
I think Mahonia, assuming we are looking at the green leaves, I have berberis small red leaves, orange berries later, yes lots of prickles!
rather a lot of different berberis to choose from and that's one of them.
A photo of the shape of the bush would help ID which one this is
I don't think it is mahonia and it looks very different to the Berberis thunbergii that I have elsewhere.
It is very different to Berberis thunbergii
Look at images of Berberis gagnepainii for example
We had one,and when we dug it out,it had yellow roots. I think that means it's a berberis
Oh wow, yes ok, much more similar to that
Have a look at Berberis julianae also.
definitely NOT mahonia which doesn't have any spines but stiff leathery prickly leaves - my favourite shrub for birds.
