Hornwort v Algae

AngieRAngieR Posts: 347

My pond is really coming along and as I expected there is a fair bit of algae right now.  From what I understand this is completely normal and will sort itself out given enough time.

However, I have noticed that the algae, the green stringy stuff, appears to be smothering all the hornwort floating in the pond. Should I leave it be and let it sort itself out or try to remove as much of the algae from the plants?

The hornwort is/was doing really well so want to avoid losing all those clumps I put in.

Cheers in advance.

It can get out of hand and in your new w/l pond as in mine I've also had blanket weed.
To make life easier for your young hornwort I'd suggest remove some around it. Look for eggs though - I had lots of newt eggs recently like white dots amongst the blanket weed and there will be lots of creatures hiding amongst it, so give it a little wiggle first, then gently pull it away from the hornwort then out of the water. If you just lift it out the plants will come out too and it'll be tricky to sort one from the other. Leave it on the pond edge for a few hours for escapees then onto the compost

Cheers Pete. I did exactly as you suggest not to do this morning and it was difficult to separate them. I swirled my fingers around amongst it and that was more effective.  It's lying on the edge now to let the critters to get back in the pond.

It's one of those things you'll have to do every few weeks usually Angie. By mid Sept it usually forms less and less. But as your plants grow they'll use up what nutrients there are and the blanket week (and other forms of algae) starve.
Then the cycle start again the following spring
