It looks like a European Hornet to me, Hosta.

They are useful in the garden, as they devour insect pests.

They won't usually sting you unless they are disturbed, so I should just make sure that they are left in peace.

Wonderful Hosta ... I love hornets ... well the European ones anyway ... I've a feeling she might find a bird box a bit constricting ... she might build an extension image

They might have been disturbed when that oak tree got damaged in the storm ... they often live in old oak trees.

Be aware that they fly about a lot in the evenings, and are attracted to bright lights, so if you have the lights on and the windows open they might pay you a visit.  Alternatively if you shut the windows you might hear them knocking on the glass image

If that happens it's a good idea to have a bright light on a bit away from the house to divert them. image
