They might have been disturbed when that oak tree got damaged in the storm ... they often live in old oak trees.
Be aware that they fly about a lot in the evenings, and are attracted to bright lights, so if you have the lights on and the windows open they might pay you a visit. Alternatively if you shut the windows you might hear them knocking on the glass
If that happens it's a good idea to have a bright light on a bit away from the house to divert them.

It looks like a European Hornet to me, Hosta.
They are useful in the garden, as they devour insect pests.
They won't usually sting you unless they are disturbed, so I should just make sure that they are left in peace.
