Clematis Pink Fantasy

Pauline3Pauline3 Posts: 13

Hi All,

Not  sure if this should come under plants or problem solving but hopefull of some advice out there.

Pink Fantasy Clematis has so many flowers this year but no growth, it's not yet reached the top of the cane support let alone the fence !  I know they have to be planted deeper than in the pot  but can they be planted too deep and if so is that why there is no height to it ?

Thank you, Pauline.

How old is the plant? Taylors sell them at around a metre high for a 2 year old plant. The Clematis Society say - 1 yr sleeping, second year creeping, third year leaping.

I don't think there is a problem but try dead-heading as each flower goes over and give it some liquid tomato feed to encourage more flowers.   If you prune it back to the lowest pair of buds next spring and give it a good handful of slow release clematis food - about March - you should get more and more stems produced each year as the root system develops.

Train and tie these in as horizontally as possible and you will end up with a magnificent clematis but, as Hogweed indicates, they need a year or two to get their feet in the ground.
