Hi eileeno.
Some kind of bug or butterfly larvae.?
I'd love to know what it is too! I found one of them when I was planting something the other day, but by the time i went and got my camera to take a pic, a bird had taken it
It's a chrysalis (pupa) of a moth or butterfly ... it's the transitional stage between caterpillar and the adult.
Leave it where it is or in a similar spot and when it's finished developing the moth or butterfly will emerge.
