What to do with cut/dug up weeds?

I'm going to be tackling my overgrown allotment for the first time this weekend. It's covered in weeds - what should I do with these weeds once I've cut them or dug them up?

If I try and compost them - the seeds will just come back and haunt me later on, correct?

Thanks

  • The more I read, the more I see it may be the best bet to cover it in cardboard and a black sheet and let nature take its course. Would anyone recommend this?

The old chaps on the allotment site I know well gather all the weeds up and let them dry out in the sunshine, then burn them, either in a small heap covered with turves so they smoulder, or in a garden incinerator.

    Check the allotment rules first.

I don't like covering the soil with plastic/cardboard etc.  In my opinion it sours the soil and provides the perfect breeding ground for slugs.  Dig it over, removing weeds and let the weather and fresh air do what it does best.
