The boot should be off after I visit hospital on 10 July ... but it does come off in the evening for a bathe and a gentle massage ... OH went into the city and came back with some Bodyshop Peppermint Foot Lotion ... he's a star

Oh, dear, newts gone?? they are probably just under the rocks around the edge, we used to have newts under every pot and stone long before we had a pond.
Don't forget that to keep your water clear you need two thirds of the pond area covered with pond weeds. If you can see the bottom, you may not have enough plants in there. I couldn't see the bottom of ours as it's thick with weed and the newts can walk on top of it to get out. Also we have a largish sloping beach area.
i had slimey blanket weed at the start but since the plants grew very thickly, there's been no more. It's quite therapeutic to sit there twiddling it out on a stick.
This years tads are taking their time, most are out, tiny little frogs but still a few tads in there.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
I wonder about newts, I've just found a tiny one, about inch long, a great distance away from the pond, he couldn't have walked it, do they always breed in water? Can't think where this one came from, also form the past when dad didn't have a pond. Or is there a type of land newt? Maybe not newts at all.

Panic over..........just spotted a newt coming up for breath
The blanket weed is quite thick at the bottom of the pond so as LYN suggests i have been removing it whilst trying to let the critters slip back into the water
The large frog spends a lot of time in a fold in the plastic liner so I have just placed a large tile in at the bottom so he can rest

Sounds normal. Young newts will disperse a long way from the pond. They don't breed till they're 2 or 3 years old so they have no need to return to the pond during that time. They might come back to breed in your pond or find another one elsewhere.

The pond is so clear I can nearly see the bottom at the 18 inch end
We buy "stuff " and some of it "sort " of works or doesn't work at all and its very pleasing to find something that works
I can now see the newts or NEWST for the first time and for the first time in my life
There are lots of tiny black creatures shaped like a pin swimming about so all is good
The adult and all baby newts seem to have gone
? Is this normal

Newts don't live in ponds all year round ... they spend most of their lives on dry land, returning to ponds to breed ... they'll be back
