I have new snails coming. I can't believe I'm looking forward to welcoming snails!!!!
I'm hoping they go to town on the duck weed which has mysteriously appeared and the blanketweed out in the middle where I can't reach it (without a dinghy!).
We get so much pleasure just laying on our tums on a sunny afternoon watching the pond snails munching on the algae and duckweed ... they're growing at a rate of knots (the snails that is) and breeding prolifically ..... love 'em

This is surprising to some, but both newts and frogs can drown if unable to get out of water. Newts are surprisingly poor swimmers in late summer (after mating / egg laying season has ended) and unless they are able to egress from the water can either drown or die of exhaustion.
A simple solution is to create a 'pond ladder' with a branch or piece of wood.
Hapless herpetologist can I ask if newts can climb out via those pond baskets that you put marginals in? I have Bertie (frog) and Doris (newt) in my pond (I did have Boris as well but not seen him for days) which is a raised affair with edges that overhang the pond. I have several baskets at one end of the pond which are seated on sandstone, just below the surface and have lots of roots growing through them - would that be sufficient for them to get out or do I need to provide extra help?
That would depend on the size of the frog / newt and the extent to which the pot is within reach of the bank of your pond. One of my ponds has quite steep banks but I have noticed that frogs are able to use Lilly pads to launch themselves onto the bank. You can try growing a plant to function as a 'newt ladder '. Creeping Jenny is a wonderful plant to grow at the side of a pond; it tends to reach into the pond water and amphibians can climb up it to safety. It looks good too.

Mine used to clean the water lily leaves. Then they ran away from home...or something.

I now have 10 new snails and lots of greenery added to the pond and I am expecting a delivery of
Interpet Extract Barley Straw 250ml which is meant to clear the green water
If it does not work I will try Blagdons
Thanks to you all

The concrete is about 6 foot away from a wild area that I dont tend at all and has ferns brambles and grasses next to a hedge
I hope the critters can cross this desert to get from the vegetation to the pond
Thanks for your input
